Original diptych “Errance”
When I was invited to take part in an exhibition on the theme of “Labyrinth”, I thought about what that word meant to me.
It was summer, and I had spent several weeks navigating hospital corridors ahead of yet another operation.
When you live with a chronic illness, the labyrinth is twofold.
First, there’s the physical one: the maze of a hospital. “Follow the blue line.” “Route 206, take the red lifts on the right, then go to the end of the corridor.” “Oh, it’s not in this building, it’s on the other side.”
Then there’s the mental one. A new treatment, a possible way out? An unkind doctor, a dead end, and you retrace your steps.
My illness is called endometriosis, and the traces of my wandering are visible on my body. I’ve had four laparoscopies so far, probably not my last, and the labyrinth has become my home.
